Class News 11/21: Students started working with multiplying and dividing positive and negative numbers this week. 11/7: We developed an algorithm for adding positive and negative numbers today and practiced using it. Students need lots of practice with this! A fun way to practice is using a deck of cards. Let black cards be positive numbers and red cards be negative numbers. Draw two cards and add them together. Encourage students to use their algorithms. 11/6: We have had quite the past few days with the walkathon, election day, and today's field trip. I did not attend the field trip, but I can say that those that stayed back had a pretty great time as well. We are currently working on developing algorithms for adding and subtracting positive and negative integers. Students can't get enough practice with this! 10/29: Students have a brief quiz tomorrow over investigation 1 of our new unit. They received a review in class. The answer key can be found to the left. 10/28: Today we wrapped up problem 1.3. Students should be comfortable using a number line to add positive and negative numbers. Tomorrow we will explore a new method. Please note that permission slips for the walkathon are due tomorrow! 10/24: Sorry for the lack of updates, we have been in the process of transitioning from our first to second unit and I have had to be out for a meeting. During that time, we have done another i-ready assessment. Students also used Khan Academy to explore the topics in this unit. Problem 1.1 and 1.2 were assigned in class on Monday and Tuesday. Today students received their first homework of the new unit, p. 20-22, # 6-8, 12-19, 23-26. If needed, there is a link to this assignment to the left. 10/17: The quizzes are in the gradebook (for the most part). Some students need to make time to meet with me to go over the quiz. If this is the case, it says so on the quiz and in MiStar. This is an important process as I will be working with each student individually over missed concepts and they can earn partial credit back. We also did a short i-ready to measure progress. We will be doing these 15-20 mini progress checks every few weeks. Students received their new books "Accentuate the Negative". We begin problem 1.1 tomorrow. This book encourages use of models such as number lines to help students as they develop their understanding of negative numbers. Calculators will not be allowed during this section. 10/14: We began our quiz today. Students will have a little more time on it tomorrow to finish it. Please study tonight! 10/11: We postponed our test until Monday and spent some time reviewing today. Students received a study guide and worked on it in class today. We also went through the guide together. You can find a link to the answer key in the assignment calendar. Students should take a little time this weekend to review and ensure they are ready for Monday. Please let me know if you have any questions. 10/9: We are fast approaching the end of our first unit on probability. Today we started our last section, which has students creating area models to help determine theoretical probabilities. We are testing on Friday and moving into our next unit on Monday. Conferences are tomorrow, I hope to see you there! I will have i-Ready reports available. 10/8: We wrapped investigation 3 today. Students received a homework assignment from their book, available as a link in the assignment calendar. Students are doing well creating models such as tree diagrams, but some are struggling with connecting them with theoretical probability. This would be a great topic to look at with your student. 10/7: We began problem 3.4 today, which deals with creating a simulation to predict the likelihood of winning a certain type of fictional scratch off ticket. Students initially felt they had a much higher chance than they did in reality :) We should be testing over this unit this upcoming Friday, and getting into our next unit on positive and negative integers on Monday. As a reminder, conferences are Thursday this week. I will be handing out i-Ready reports there. I hope to see you! 10/4: Quiz grades were posted. Quizzes were handed back to students. I try to leave helpful notes anytime there was an error made and encouraged students to make corrections to their quiz and to keep it for further study material. Students struggled a bit with differentiating between events that are impossible, have a 100% chance of happening, are equally likely, or are not equally likely. This would be a great conversation topic. 9/30: Students will be taking a quiz tomorrow over investigations 1 and 2 in our book. Students received a review today, and we went over it in class. I am attaching the review as well as an answer key as a link in the assignment calendar to the left. Students wanting additional review are welcome to come to my room after school today! 9/26: We talked about tree diagrams as a method for counting and organizing outcomes of an event today. Students were assigned p.36 #1-2. We will have our first quiz next week. 9/25: We had a productive day today. Most students finished the problem in class, some may still have part of problem 2.2 to do for homework. A-C is due tomorrow. Have a great afternoon. 9/24/19: We had a really interesting conversation about the amount of possible seating charts for our class today. Be sure to ask your student about it. MiStar has been updated. 9/19/19: We had a strange day with a partial power outage at the middle school. While it certainly made the day interesting, classes were not disrupted too much. We are just about wrapped with our beginning of year i-Ready testing. We will be getting back to our curriculum tomorrow and getting back into a solid routine. MiStar has been updated. 9/12/19: Students took the the 7th grade midterm as a pretest today. They will take this same test again in January. This serves as a way to measure our students growth and learning over the next few months. We will continue this tomorrow. I recommend students bring a fun book to read in case they finish a bit early. 9/10/19 Today students received their books "What Do You Expect". This book is all about probability, and involves a lot of games. It's a great way to start off the year. Students should have problem 1.1 Part A finished for class tomorrow. |
