Class News
11/21: Students have been making "fraction strips" in order to compare fractions. They will need these for the duration of the unit. I gave them an envelope in which to keep them. 11/14: 6th graders took a few days on their unit test, but we are finally into our new unit. Students received their new books "Comparing Bits and Pieces". This unit focuses on fractions, decimals, and percent. 11/7: Test tomorrow! Please see the review key to the left. We went over the review in class today. 11/6: We have had quite the past few days with the walkathon, election day, and today's field trip. I did not attend the field trip, but I can say that those that stayed back had a pretty great time as well. Getting back into the swing of things, we have an assessment over our first unit this Friday. Students receive a review on Monday and should have it completed for class tomorrow (Thursday). You can find a copy of the review to the left. Thanks! 10/29: We discussed the distributive property today. Students had one small problem to try at home today. 10/28: Today we discussed properties of even and odd numbers. Tomorrow we will begin looking at the distributive property. Please note that permission slips for the walkathon are due tomorrow! 10/24: Students took a "check up" today to see how they are doing on the content that we have been working on for the past week and a half. We are almost finished with this unit and will be testing on all of it soon. 10/17: We are using our prime factorizations to find the greatest common factor (GCF) and lowest common multiple (LCM). Students took notes in class and had one to try out at home. 10/14: Students have a brief homework assignment to find the prime factorizations of 160, 240, 320, 10,000. See the clip below if for a refresher :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGbOiYhHY2c Additionally, please take a moment to check MiStar. 10/11: Thank you to everyone who was able to make it to conferences last night. If you were unable to make it and would like to discuss your child's progress, please email me. We started working on prime factorization today. The following video is a great overview of many of the concepts we have covered so far in class. Please take a moment and check it out to see what your child is currently learning. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGbOiYhHY2c 10/9: Students took their quiz today. Tomorrow we move into investigation 3, which is all about prime factorization. Conferences are tomorrow, I hope to see everyone! I will have i-Ready reports available to take home. Be sure to check out MiStar to check your student's progress. 10/8: Partner quiz over investigation 2 tomorrow! Review factors and multiples. 10/7: Today we compared multiples and factors again. Students may have taken a long time on problem 2.2 to find the LCM of 12, 14, and 16. We will be working on a shortcut to finding the LCM of larger numbers. Today, we started problem 2.3 which deals with dividing snacks evenly into snack packs. Students should complete 2.3 part A for class tomorrow. Students will be taking a partner quiz on Wednesday this week. As a reminder, conferences are on Thursday this week. I will be providing i-Ready reports at conferences. 10/4: Today we talked about the 13 and 17 year cycles of cicadas. Students were tasked with determining the next time the two will arrive together. Ask your student about it! Students quizzes were posted and handed back. I wrote some helpful notes on the returned quizzes that students should have read and responded to. Students should have made corrections to their quiz and kept it with their notes as this could be a valuable resource on upcoming tests. Students are struggling with remembering factors vs multiples. They have taken notes on this and should be able to reference them during assignments and tests. It might be a good idea to check in with your student to make sure their notes are organized and that they can readily find them. 9/30/19: Students have a quiz tomorrow over investigation one. We reviewed in class today. 9/26/19: No homework today. I recommend playing the factor game or the product game with your student. 9/25/19: Today students worked on their first "Homework" assignment. This type of assignment is different as it is graded for accuracy and is typically worth more points. This assignment is due tomorrow. I gave a copy in class. The link can also be found on the assignment calendar to the left or in your students math book.Have a great afternoon! 9/24/19: Students learned to play the product game today. The game can be found by googling "The Factor Game". Play a round or two with your student! 9/20/19: Today we started problem 1.2. We finished problem 1.2 together in class. Students had the last 15 minutes of class to complete parts A-D. This is due Monday. 9/19/19: We had a strange day with a partial power outage at the middle school. While it certainly made the day interesting, classes were not disrupted too much. We are just about wrapped with our beginning of year i-Ready testing. We will be getting back to our curriculum tomorrow and getting back into a solid routine. MiStar has been updated. 9/12/19: Students took the the 6th grade midterm as a pretest today. They will take this same test again in January. This serves as a way to measure our students growth and learning over the next few months. We will continue this tomorrow. I recommend students bring a fun book to read in case they finish a bit early. 9/10/19- Students received their book Prime Time today. In this unit, we will be focusing on different characteristics of numbers (prime vs composite, even vs odd). Today we played a game called the "Factor Game". Take a moment and play a round with them! |
